St. Bernards Foundation, Women's Advisory Council Threadz of Life

The Women’s Advisory Council of the St. Bernards Development Foundation will sponsor a free quilt and fabric show in Jonesboro April 12 called Threadz of Life.

The show, which is expected to attract quilters and others interested in yarn projects and weavings from at least a three-state area, will have as its health focus the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. People’s Choice ribbons will be awarded.

Scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Threadz of Life will be held at the St. Bernards Auditorium, 505 East Washington. No admission will be charged.

Members of area quilt clubs and other quilters from Arkansas, Missouri and Tennessee will display some of their favorite works. And antique quilts – those at least 50 years old – also will be displayed in a special area. Another area will be set up to show “Quilts of Valor” made by members of the Loose Threads Quilt Club in honor of wounded soldiers. In addition, vendors will be on hand with a variety of quilt-related merchandise.

The show also will include displays of yarn projects.

The health awareness component of the program will focus on osteoporosis. Free bone density screenings will be offered, and educational materials on osteoporosis – its prevention, detection and treatment – will be available.

As a part of the quilt show, some members of the Women’s Advisory Council and other area quilters took part in a quilter’s challenge, creating 18-inch blocks for a quilt that will be raffled at the show. Quilters picked up fat quarters, then designed unique blocks that feature standard quilting patterns as well as some that use shadow quilting, appliqués, yoyos and beads. Doris Penter of Trumann used the blocks to create a quilt that will be raffled.

Raffle tickets may be purchased from the Foundation office (400 East Street), from members of the Women’s Advisory Council and at booths at the Healthy Heart 2-Mile Run/Walk, the HMG Health and Fitness Expo at the Arkansas State University Convocation Center on April 4-6 and at the Threadz of Life show. The quilt will be raffled at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20.

Persons interested in showing quilts may submit two by completing entry forms located on the Foundation website at www.stbernardsfoundation.org or at www.stbernards.info (click on “Development Foundation” on the right side of the screen). Entry forms also are available at Quilters Corner, 2010 Wilkins, and The Fabric Store, 1405 Larkwood Drive, both in Jonesboro. Deadline for entering quilts is March 21.

Sponsors for Threadz of Life include St. Bernards Village, Therapy Providers of Arkansas and P&G Pharmaceuticals.
