With construction under way on the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House, St. Bernards Development Foundation is turning an opportunity into a catalyst to push the Gift of Peace capital campaign to the $5 million mark.

The Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan, will award $500,000 in the form of a challenge grant contingent upon our securing $5 million in pledges by July 1, 2009.  "The additional funding will allow us to complete the hospice house in its entirety," explained Foundation President Marilyn Hummelstein.

"Because of this wonderful opportunity, additional naming opportunities have opened...both for rooms and for furnishing specific areas.  We are working to meet the Kresge challenge, aggressively seeking assistance from donors who want to ensure that this free-standing hospice house becomes a true Gift of Peace for the communities we serve."

An early goal of $3.5 million was set for the construction, but that was for a hospice house for a dozen patients, with options for expansion.  Into the campaign, based on feedback we received from donors, supporters and the medical community it quickly became clear that the expansion could not wait.  A decision was made to work toward building and completing a first class residential hospice house for 20 patients.

"This hospice house will allow St. Bernards to deliver compassionate end-of-life care in a decidedly home-like setting to patients who for one reason or another cannot remain in their own homes for hospice care," Hummelstein says.  "We need to be able to open in the fall with a fully furnished hospice house ready for 20 patients."  Meeting this need will require us to reach our goal of $5 million in pledges by July 1, 2009.
