JONESBORO — The Jonesboro Sun is seeking caring cooks who are willing to part with their favorite recipes to raise awareness about hospice care.
The Sun is collecting recipes for “Caring Cooks, Recipes from Home.”
“We’ve always wanted to publish a cookbook with reader-submitted recipes,” said David Mosesso, publisher of The Sun.
Proceeds from the cookbook will benefit the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House.
“Our goal is to donate the proceeds from the sales of the cookbooks to this great new facility that will benefit all of Northeast Arkansas,” Mosesso said.
Project sponsors include Bill’s Fresh Market and St. Bernards Development Foundation.
“This project wouldn’t be possible without the support of our sponsors,” Mosesso said. “Together we’re going to publish a cookbook that you’ll not only want to purchase, but one that you’ll use for many years to come.”
Recipes for the full-color cookbook will be selected by a committee of representatives from Bill’s Fresh Market, St. Bernards Development Foundation and The Sun.
Recipes will be divided into the following categories — appetizers and beverages, soups and salads, vegetables and side dishes, main dishes, breads, rolls and pastries, desserts and cookies and candy. One “caring cook” will be highlighted for each of the recipe categories.
“We encourage all of our readers to submit their favorite recipes. We will publish as many as possible,” he said.
Hospice house
Marilyn Hummelstein, president of St. Bernards Development Foundation, said the cookbook will be a good tool to educate the community about the hospice program.
“I think it will bring awareness (about hospice) for a long, long time,” she said. “Any time somebody picks this cookbook up, they are going to know and think about Hospice House.”
St. Bernards broke ground on the $5.5 million Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in September. It will include 20 private rooms in a 19,000-square-foot space. Families will be able to visit their loved ones at any time, and each patient room will have space for a family member to spend the night. The facility will also feature a chapel, a covered porch, a children’s area and a day room with dining area.
“It’s just a homelike environment,” Hummelstein said. “It’s an environment that is peaceful and restful.”
The freestanding hospice house is unique to Northeast Arkansas, Hummelstein said, adding that there are only two others in the state — in North Little Rock and Mountain Home, after which the Jonesboro facility is modeled.
Hummelstein said the facility is scheduled to be completed and ready for patients by late October or early November.
Wally Orr, co-owner of Bill’s Fresh Market, said he is honored to be able to raise funds and awareness for the hospice house through the cookbook project.
“Any time you can make someone’s final days a little bit easier,” it is a worthy cause, he added.
