St. Bernards Offers Healthy Living Programs for Children and Teens
The St. Bernards Diabetes Management Center will offer two summer programs targeting youngsters and teen-agers who can benefit from a healthy living program.
Fit Quest for Kids will provide tools to help children ages 5-12 to make healthy lifestyle changes so they can help prevent the onset of health issues related to inactivity and poor eating habits. It is scheduled for June 9-July 3.
Participants will meet on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Allen Park Community Center on Race Street. They will learn how what and how much they choose to eat impacts their lives … and eventually their health. And they also will learn the importance of physical activity in healthy living.
Youngsters will have “assignments” that involve parental support … like involving parents in food choices and engaging in physical activities (like walking) with their parents. In addition, fun activities will be incorporated into Fit Quest sessions, with youngsters taking part in things like soccer, relay races and the like.
The Fit Quest for Teenz – planned for July 7-31 – is similar, but teaching and activities are age-appropriate for youth ages 13-18. The teens also will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays at the Allen Park Community Center for four weeks.
And they also will be given tools to help them make better choices in terms of nutrition and physical activity. In addition, they will learn psycho-social skills for coping. Exercise and nutrition will remain key focuses, but the teen-agers will require less parental involvement in the program.
Cost for each program is $45.
The deadline to register for Fit Quest for Kidz is Friday, May 22; while the deadline to register for Fit Quest for Teenz is Friday, June 12.
Parents may secure additional information and register youngsters by calling the St. Bernards Diabetes Management Center at 972-4341. | |
